Etiquette on the Internet, or Netiquette as it is more commonly referred to as, has become an integral part of having a peaceful Internet experience. By following these Internet customs, the Internet "surfer" can more likely avoid flame wars (hate mail) and other types of aggressive conduct. One way to avoid confrontations is to remember that while interacting on the Internet, one has to remember that the tone in which one says something is not conveyed in pure words as accurately as it could be when it is said in person. For this reason, there are emoticons. Emoticons allow the user to more adequately portray the tone that he or she intends. Another activity that causes problems is "spamming". Spamming is when a user either sends mass mailings to someone or when a user sends constant garble to another user's computer over a chat system. Spamming disallows other users to continue their services as normal. This and other "denial of service" attacks can get your Internet account revoked or banned from certain services. To find out more information on Nettiquete, you should look at one of the better resources on the Internet about netiquette, the CoreRules of Netiquette from Virginia Shea's book, Netiquette. |
